Doing Well - Balanced Books for Colchester Council

Securing Prosperity for Colchester

Lib Dem led Colchester has done again what many Councils struggle with - to balance the books.

Government funding has been slashed - perhaps reduced by 40% or more given cost pressure, inflation and growing demand for services. But, efficiency, savings and growth that brings in more income means CBC can submit another balanced budget for 2019/20.

Despite the reductions in Government funding - we will ensure we maintain current award winning services, provide £2.4m investment into our spending priorities including the Northern Gateway Sports scheme and will invest in what matters most, including highways, cleaner streets and extra policing and community safety.

Lib Dem David King, Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: “There is no doubt that councils are facing some very difficult and serious financial pressures because of reduced government funding. Nevertheless, we are managing these fiscal pressures well and getting the balance right.  “This is a prudent budget. It continues to reflect our commitment to regeneration and improvement. It will allow us to continue to provide high quality services and to invest in long-term projects such as the Northern Gateway. But it also keeps money back in reserves and balances, to ensure we can meet problems as they arise. And it will allow us to meet the concerns and needs of residents now and continue to deliver award-winning services'.

Lib Dems - wise owls: by keeping the books balanced, by a model that draws in income and makes Colchester attractive to business, we can maintain our services, invest and improve life in the borough.
