Feedback on the proposed Northern Gateway sports and leisure development from residents who managed to attend the drop-in sessions late last month has been very positive, and there is a buzz about this future destination for Colchester, local Lib Dem Ward Councillors Martin Goss and Dominic Graham, County Councillor Anne Turrell and Focus Team member Phil Coleman have said.
The initial detailed planning application, to be submitted in the next few weeks, is expected to propose restaurants, a state of the art 12-screen IMAX and 4DX Cineworld, an 80-bed hotel, car parking, three large leisure units (with suggested uses for rock climbing and wind tunnel experience, amongst others), and engaging play facilities for children.
The developer invites pre-application comments by 5th February. You can view the proposals and give your feedback via this link:
The 18-acre site off Junction 28 of the A12, next to Colchester United FC's home Weston Homes Community Stadium, is owned freehold by Colchester Borough Council.
In September 2015 the Council's Revolving Investment Fund committee approved a lease of the site to the developer, Turnstone Colchester Limited. Lib Dem Paul Smith, Leader of the Council, said that the development would generate significant new income streams to help support the Council to maintain its front line services, as well as employment opportunities.
Outline planning consent for the site was granted in March 2006. It can be viewed by searching for Application Number O/COL/01/1622 via this link:
