Colchester’s Liberal Democrat MP Sir Bob Russell has confirmed that there is a united voice from MPs in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex in support of a “rail manifesto” for the three counties served by the Greater Anglia line from Norwich to London Liverpool Street.
Sir Bob said “The manifesto has been driven by the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership which covers Suffolk and Norfolk.
Ludicrously, Colchester and North Essex are in the South East LEP which stretches to the outskirts of Brighton in Sussex.
“In the early days there were fears that the New Anglia LEP, in their desire to get a train journey of 90 minutes from Norwich to London, would achieve this at the expense of inter-city trains no longer stopping at Colchester.
“I was having none of this! I argued that these trains should continue to serve Colchester, and that, unless I got a written guarantee in the region’s rail manifesto that there would be no reduction in the number of inter-city trains for Colchester, then I would not sign up. I got that guarantee, and that is how we have unanimous support from MPs on this very important matter.”
