Election 2018 Results
Lib Dem results nationally on May 3rd were very encouraging - 'the best for a decade'.
The party defended control of Eastleigh, South Lakes, Sutton, Cheltenham and Watford (where we held both the mayoralty and the council). Lib Dems gained control of Councils in Richmond, South Cambridgeshire, Three Rivers and Kingston upon Thames. And won more seats in Hull, Liverpool, Cambridge, Sunderland, Gosport, Merton, Portsmouth, Sheffield, St Albans, Winchester and in many more places up and down the country.
The Colchester results were much more mixed.
The shock of the night was the loss of St Anne's and St John's, served like the wider borough so very ably by Paul Smith, our Leader of the Lib Dem led Council. Lib Dems were really sad to also lose Jess Scott-Boutell, standing in Stanway and that they were unable to retain New Town and Christchurch, contested for the first time by a very dedicated Catherine Spindler.
We pay tribute to Paul and Jess: they have served our borough so very well and remain highly valued advisors and colleagues as Lib Dem team looks for the positives, and plans for the future.
Other results gave us heart. Sam McCarthy improved his share of the vote in Shrub End. David King won well in Mile End and former independent Andrea Luxford-Vaughan stormed to victory in Wivenhoe.
Every thank you to all our candidates, in every Ward and to the many residents and supporters who have helped deliver, canvass or encourage every candidate.
