Colchester calls on the government to rethink schools' funding
Following hard on the heels of recent cuts to the NHS, Mental Health and Social Care budgets, we are now being told by the Conservatives that our cash strapped schools are to face a whopping £2.5 Billion funding cut.
Currently, over 96% of secondary pupils attend schools in Essex that are rated good or better by Ofsted and achieve results that are consistently above the national averages.
This is against a backdrop of rising costs and funding cuts, with Essex schools continually being forced to make hard choices, including overseeing reductions in school support staff.
These new funding cuts will see a drop in new teacher entrants, an exodus of demoralised teachers, further reductions in staffing levels, increased class sizes and diminished curricular and pastoral provision.
Secondary schools in Essex are forecasted to experience a significant spike in student numbers over the next few years. The situation therefore is both unfair and unsustainable.
We are asking government, in the strongest possible terms, to properly fund schools and to halt any proposed cuts that will damage Essex's future.
