Colchester City Council Coalition Discussions
*Liberal Democrats to Open Discussions on New Council Administration*
The Liberal Democrat Group on Colchester City Council has confirmed that discussions aimed at continuing the previous coalition administration have concluded without agreement.
It is clear from news articles from Labour and the new independent group that there has been significant in-fighting and disagreements, which after many attempts, cannot be overcome. Sadly, those partners have not delivered a stable coalition deal for us or for the people of Colchester.
The Group will now open discussions with the Conservative Group with a view to forming a stable administration for the Council.
The Liberal Democrats remain proud of their record in leading the Council over recent years, including delivering more secure homes for people facing homelessness, investing more than £2 million in children's playgrounds, supporting community infrastructure, improving public spaces and championing environmental and biodiversity projects across the city.
Liberal Democrat Cllr David King said:
"My priority throughout these discussions has been to secure a stable administration that puts the interests of Colchester residents first. Over recent days, a huge amount of time and effort has been invested in trying to continue the previous coalition arrangements, because many of us believed continuity offered the best route forward for the city.
"I have acted as messenger, intermediary and problem-solver in an attempt to bring parties together around that shared objective. Unfortunately, despite those efforts, it has not proved possible to secure an agreement that would provide the stability and leadership Colchester needs.
"In these circumstances, we believe it is right to explore whether the two largest political groups on the Council can work together to provide a stable administration. Our focus remains exactly where it has always been: delivering for the people of Colchester and ensuring the Council is well placed to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead."
Further updates will be provided following the conclusion of discussions.
