New Coalition Agreement Approved to Provide Stable Leadership for Colchester
Councillors have approved a new coalition agreement, providing a stable administration for Colchester and enabling the council to focus on delivering for residents, businesses and communities across the city.
The new administration builds on a period of strong delivery for Colchester. Over the last four years, the council has worked with partners across the city to deliver significant progress against the priorities set out for Colchester.
During that period, nearly £490 million of investment has been secured for the city, including more than £40 million for city centre regeneration, £6.25 million for the Digital Forum and around £50 million for ultrafast broadband infrastructure. Significant investment has also been made in heritage assets, public spaces and community facilities.
The council has delivered new affordable homes, expanded support for residents facing housing difficulties and reduced reliance on expensive temporary accommodation. New neighbourhood health initiatives have been established, support services have helped thousands of households access financial assistance, and investment has been committed to improving play areas and community facilities across the city.
These achievements have been made possible through the work of council staff, community organisations, local businesses, volunteers and public sector partners, all of whom play an important role in making Colchester a successful and vibrant city.
The coalition partners have agreed that the priority now is to build on that progress through constructive and collaborative working.
Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Martin Goss said:
“Colchester is bigger than any one political party. Residents expect us to work together, focus on the issues that matter and deliver good local services.
“This agreement provides the stability needed to move forward. We look forward to working with our coalition partners, councillors from across the chamber, town and parish councils, businesses, voluntary organisations and residents as we continue building a thriving and ambitious Colchester.”
The coalition agreement establishes a framework for stable government and shared priorities over the coming years. The administration's focus will be on delivering practical outcomes for residents, supporting economic growth, tackling housing challenges, investing in communities and maintaining high-quality public services.
The new administration will now begin work on its programme for the year ahead.
